A performance model was developed for the World Food Programme’s aviation department and implemented across its operations globally. This has allowed WFP’s aviation managers to continuously focus on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of their operations as opposed to getting stuck in day-to-day operational issues. The framework was created by adapting network and route performance KPI’s from the airline industry to WFP’s non-profit environment. A corresponding software tool was developed, which automatically collects and processes the necessary operational data and visualizes it into performance indicators. To fully implement the framework within the organization, 50 aviation managers were trained on strategies and tactics on how to improve aviation performance, in a dedicated training programme.
